Dmitry Medvedev, who first expressed the idea of a four-day work week in 2019 at the International Labor Conference in Geneva, said that the pandemic has become an additional incentive for the transition to such a format. He noted that it would be possible to return to the discussion of the issue soon.
The pandemic "certainly did not kill this idea, but revived it," Medvedev explained. According to him, the forced self-isolation "brought its own colors to this story." “It is clear that a significant part of people have switched to remote work and are really working not five, but four days and according to a different schedule, and someone generally builds their working day differently,” he explained.
At the same time, he stressed that the massive transition to a four-day period should not harm the economy. According to him, this format is not applicable where there is a continuous production cycle or certain types of services are provided.
The four-day week is suitable for those who are engaged in "standard types of work," Medvedev said. “At the same time, labor productivity should not fall, production indicators should not fall. If this can be combined, then this idea will be able to earn more broadly,”he stressed.
